Background: BESDA

Before the initiation of the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) initiative in Nigeria, the statistics regarding out-of-school children were quite significant. According to various reports and surveys, here are some estimated figures:

  1. UNICEF Report (2018): UNICEF estimated that Nigeria had about 10.5 million out-of-school children, which was the highest number globally at that time. This figure included children who had never attended school as well as those who dropped out.

  2. National Bureau of Statistics (2015): According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) conducted in 2015, approximately 8.7 million children aged 5-14 years were out of school.

  3. Education Data Initiative (2018): The Education Data Initiative reported that about 13.2 million Nigerian children were out of school in 2018. This figure encompassed both primary and secondary school-aged children.

These statistics highlight the scale of the out-of-school children challenge in Nigeria prior to the implementation of BESDA. The initiative was launched to address these issues by increasing access to quality education, especially for marginalized and disadvantaged children across the country, including states like Bauchi.

Objectives of BESDA

The Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) initiative represents a significant stride towards addressing one of Nigeria’s most pressing educational challenges: the high number of out-of-school children. With an estimated 10.5 million children not attending school, Nigeria faces a critical hurdle that impacts its socio-economic development. The absence of education for such a large segment of the youth population not only hampers individual growth but also stifles national progress, perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality.

BESDA, launched by the Nigerian government in collaboration with international organizations and local communities, aims to bridge this educational gap. The initiative is designed with the primary objective of improving equitable access to education for out-of-school children. By focusing on inclusivity, BESDA seeks to ensure that every child, regardless of their socio-economic background, has the opportunity to receive a quality education.

Another core objective of BESDA is to enhance literacy rates among out-of-school children. Literacy is a fundamental building block for lifelong learning and empowerment, and BESDA’s programs are tailored to equip children with the necessary reading and writing skills. This focus on literacy is not merely about academic achievement but is also aimed at fostering a generation capable of contributing meaningfully to society.

The initiative brings together a range of key stakeholders, including the Nigerian government, international partners such as the World Bank, and local communities. This collaborative approach ensures that BESDA’s strategies are comprehensive and culturally relevant, addressing the unique needs of different regions across the country. With these concerted efforts, BESDA endeavors to create a more equitable educational landscape, paving the way for sustainable development and improved quality of life for all children in Nigeria.

Strategies and Achievements of BESDA

The Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) initiative has implemented a multi-faceted approach to address the issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria. One of the cornerstone strategies is community outreach programs. These initiatives involve collaboration with local leaders and stakeholders to build trust and encourage enrollment. By engaging directly with communities, BESDA has been able to identify and address barriers to education, such as cultural beliefs and economic hardships.

Another significant strategy is the establishment of learning centers in underserved areas. These centers serve as accessible educational hubs for children who might otherwise be unable to attend school due to distance or lack of resources. BESDA has successfully set up numerous such centers, ensuring that education is brought closer to marginalized populations. This initiative has been instrumental in increasing the enrollment rates in these regions.

In addition to physical learning spaces, BESDA leverages technology and innovative teaching methods to reach out to even more children. Digital learning tools and mobile classrooms have been introduced to provide flexible and scalable solutions to education delivery. These technological interventions have not only made learning more engaging but also more accessible, especially in remote areas.

BESDA’s efforts have yielded significant achievements. To date, thousands of children have been re-enrolled in school, with a noticeable improvement in literacy rates across various communities. Success stories from specific regions highlight the program’s impact; for instance, in some communities, literacy rates have doubled within just a few years of BESDA’s intervention.

Despite these successes, the program has faced several challenges, including resistance from certain localities and logistical issues in remote areas. However, BESDA has effectively navigated these obstacles through persistent community engagement, adaptive strategies, and continuous support from government and non-governmental organizations.

Overall, BESDA’s comprehensive approach has made significant strides in enhancing equitable access to education for out-of-school children in Nigeria, setting a robust foundation for future educational development.
